A Walima is a perfect chance to wear some beautiful Asian clothes, especially if you do not get many opportunities to do so. There are differing types of formal attire and the style of garment and its level of intricacy are a matter of personal taste. Prices vary accordingly, but if you go to an Asian shop (e.g. in Sparkhill, Birmingham or Southall, London), be prepared to haggle! The options presented below are just some of the options you may consider and our main wish is that our guests are comfortable and enjoy themselves.
Indian and Pakistani fashion changes constantly, being influenced by ideas from around the world. If you go to an Asian shop, they can guide you on what combinations are sensible and appropriate. There are no strict rules and you can wear whatever suits you. Hopefully, the information below will give you an idea of what is commonly done.
Indian and Pakistani Dress
For Gentlemen
The Sherwani is a long-sleeved outer coat which falls to below the knees and is buttoned down the front. It is the most formal option for gentlemen.
Sherwani
Underneath the sherwani, you will want to wear another layer, because they can be quite scratchy on the inside. This can be a simple/plain kurta (see below) , T-shirt or vest according to preference
The Kurta is a long-sleeved shirt or tunic. Being a lighter garment than the sherwani, it is usually made of cotton or silk. It typically extends just above the knees and can be worn alone or with a waistcoat. They are typically less expensive than a sherwani.
Kurta
The Kameez is similar to the kurta, except that it is longer, usually extending below the knees. There are other minor differences, such as in the collar and in the shaping of the garment. A kurta can be worn underneath a sherwani, but this is not the case for a kameez as it will poke out the bottom.
Either of the above can be worn with your usual Western trousers, such as chinos. However, there are a few styles of subcontinental trousers that can go nicely with a sherwani or kurta and are relatively inexpensive, usually being made of cotton or silk.
The pyjama is loose-fitting and wide-waisted with a drawstring or elastic waistband. They narrow down to the ankles, which can be cuffed or baggy according to preference. The kurta-pyjama is a commonly sold set. Nowadays, cuffed is much more common as in all of the pictures above
The shalwar is similar to the pyjama, being slightly looser overall. The shalwar -kameez is a commonly sold set.
Regarding shoes, Indian/Pakistani clothes often go well with brogues (especially brown or tan coloured), but feel free to buy some Indian shoes if you wish!
Trousers and Shoes
For Ladies
As mentioned above, the shalwar is a loose-fitting, elasticated trouser and the kameez is a long tunic. It is an iconic combination, usually accompanied by a scarf when worn by women. It is a popular choice for celebrations and is usually less expensive than the other two options below.

A Sari is a piece of often brightly coloured, frequently embroidered fabric five to seven yards long. It is worn over the body as a robe, with one end attached to the waist, while the other end rests over one shoulder as a stole. Nowadays it is worn over a petticoat or a blouse. Draping a sari is not straightforward and will be difficult if you’re not with someone experienced in doing so.

A Lehenga is an ankle-length skirt, which is normally accompanied with a blouse and a scarf. It is a popular choice for formal and ceremonial occasions, such as weddings. They can be quite heavy.

Shoes: Ladies can choose whichever shoes go with their outfit and are comfortable! No specific styles are recommended or discouraged.
